What Is Reiki? A Beginner’s Guide to Reiki Healing

What Is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese complementary wellness practice in which a trained practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body. The intention is to support relaxation, awareness, and the body’s natural healing response.

The word Reiki is commonly associated with the idea of spiritually guided or universal life-force energy. From a traditional Reiki perspective, the practitioner does not give the client their personal energy. Instead, the practitioner acts as a channel for Reiki while the client rests.

From a scientific perspective, the energy field described within Reiki traditions has not been established through current research. Reiki is therefore best understood as a complementary practice rather than a medical treatment.

What Happens During Reiki?

During a Reiki session, you usually remain fully clothed while resting on a treatment table or sitting comfortably. The practitioner may place their hands gently on different areas of the body or hold them slightly above you.

You do not need to concentrate, visualize, or force anything to happen. Your role is simply to rest and notice your experience.

Some people report sensations such as:

  • Warmth or tingling

  • Heaviness or lightness

  • Emotional release

  • Mental quiet

  • Deep relaxation

  • Greater awareness of their body

Other people feel very little during the session but notice that they feel calmer afterward. There is no single “correct” Reiki experience.

Is Reiki Religious?

Reiki is spiritual in nature for many practitioners, but it is not a religion. You do not have to follow a particular belief system to receive Reiki.

People seek Reiki for many reasons. Some want space to rest, while others are moving through stress, change, grief, emotional heaviness, or spiritual development.

What Reiki is, and What It Is Not

Reiki may be included alongside medical care, therapy, bodywork, meditation, and other wellness practices. It should not be used to diagnose an illness or replace treatment from a qualified healthcare professional.

Research has not clearly shown Reiki to be an effective treatment for a specific medical condition. However, many people personally describe sessions as calming or restorative.
